What is in a name?

Apparently, everything! This name ordeal is way, way bigger than I thought.

See, before we knew the sex of our child, names were so simple. We had a boy name and girl name that we'd both liked since forever ago. They were nice, they were different but not too weird. We liked them. It was too easy.

Now, the SECOND that we found out we're having a boy, suddenly we're all...
"Wait, we can't name our son _______, people will call him ______ when he's in jr. high!"

It's all so real. There is this little baby boy coming. For real. And he's going to grow up and go to jr. high. And then he's going to be a man. With a resume (prayerfully) with his name on top!

So, we have names that we like now but which one. Which one. WHICH ONE?!?

We have a hard enough time making our minds up ordering off the menu at Chili's.

My husbands name is Dana and everyone that sees us on "paper" always thinks we are lesbians. I had an insurance company ask me "where we got married" and "how great that was that we were able to get married" and "people should be able to love whoever or whomever they want".........WE AREN'T GAY PEOPLE......not that there is anything wrong with that. Don't name him Dana.

I am partial to Benjamin, Maxwell and Griffin heheheheheh. I tend to like the older more distinguished names....good strong names.

Our neighbors little boy is named "harrison" and I love that. I also like "grayson"....griffin was ALMOST a "grayson"

Your kid will accept his name as a fact of life. He won't know what it's like to have a different name. So I wouldn't worry about it too much. Just steer clear of names like "Tulula Does The Hula In Hawaii" (this is an actual name of a kid in New Zealand...I read about it on the BBC news), and you'll be fine.

That's really funny! We both have really liked Harrison, Maxwell, Griffin, and Grayson! We like Henry, too, and lots of others. We like old-fashioned, strong names.

Last year when my sone was born we went through the same thing. We didn't really know until maybe the last week before he came. Daniel Joseph. This way it gives him a few options Daniel, Danny, Dan, DJ. Whatever you choose, it'll be all good.

I know for me it didn't really seem real(even with all the monogrammed items) until I saw her for the first time. Then it was hard to decide between calling her Adeline or Addy, but now it is natural and she has grown into her name. Whatever you choose will be adorable. I remember talking about names in Lacey's basement before baby Jennings was created and I remember you saying Henry and I thought that was just the cutest name. You will eventually find the right name and I can't wait to find out...especially since I love having things monogrammed and I have been looking at cute boy things!!!

henry is a great name...Erik and I are also a fan of old fashioned names...

That's funny that you say he'll have a resume someday because Jack's legal name is Jackson because Erik wanted to give him the option of putting that on his resume someday (he thought it might sound/look better).

just a thought...practice saying the WHOLE name before you wed yourself to it...obviously, steve's parents did not do that when they named him...really, it's just a gig he does on the weekend!! w/jack, i had never heard of the bbq sauce, but, it does exist. after naming emma, someone told me they would call her eclair (emma claire). i decided an eclair is a pretty sophisticated donut, and there are probably worse things to be called. by the way...ann miller was a famous dancer...

Names of children are very important - whatever you do make sure you pay attention to the meaning of the names and not just what they sound like - kids somehow live into their name's meaning... I wrote a post about it- http://dereksanford.blogspot.com/2008/02/names-prophecies-and-asking-right.html

We had a hard time naming Anna. We were debating between Ella and Anna. Ella seemed to be very common. It was nice but we wanted something a little different. We've only met 1 other Anna so it was a good decision.

I've always thought it was important as well to name your kid something that is easy to spell or doesn't have a weird spelling. You don't want the poor kid to have to constantly correct people about how to spell their name.

i agree with everyone else, the classic, strong names are the best. Good luck!

FYI, every name can be made fun of some way or another. I am partial to the name Grayson, but I used that didn't I. Practice calling the kid and yelling the name. And I do think that they just settle into their names. I can't imagine mine with any other names. I am so excited for you!

Whoa - you got lots of great advice. I would love to help.. but we only have experience naming our animals.. and that was hard enough. (I do kick myself for using sam for samantha on a cat though.. and Eddie is because of my dad & brother.. so that probably wasnt smart to use already either. oops!)

Feel free to use Freeland, Oliver, Eddie, shoot - I even knew a few guys named Brooke in High School.

Let Powers decide. See which one he barks & gets excited for when you yell them out.

Maybe thats not the best idea. I would just listen to everyone else's advice.. not mine
