Ralphie, you'll shoot your eye out!

little cute icicles...

A little bigger, but still cute. (Incidentally, can an icicle be cute??)

Monstercicles

Deathcicles

Please note that the last deathcicle is dirty and probably about to pull our gutter off. Delicioso!

Don't let an icicle fall and break your glasses, mkay?

*****EDIT******

I Just saw the most insane, 30-foot deathcicle on barnes & Noble's building. Reading books is hazardous to your health!

Crankshaft in the comics is on his annual quest to melt the icicles. This year he is using multiple hairdryers ducttaped together. They are shorting out today in the comics and starting a fire. Last year he used a blow torch-same result. He was concerned with the gutters also, so BE CAREFUL if you try to get them down!

The best way to remove them is to throw snowballs at them. At least that works before they are too big.

I don't know if you guys bought or rent, but if you bought, you should consider a trip to Lowe's or Home Depot in the Spring for some icicle preventing electrical cable (we call it "heat tape", but "heat tape" is something you wrap a water pipe in the barn with). There are instructions in the box on how to figure out exactly how much you need and how to install it.
The ice will back up on your roof, under your shingles, and ultimately shorten the life of your roof. It can sometimes get so bad that it leaks into the house (but that is pretty rare). It made a big difference on our roof, although ours is one of the more modern style with the fifty or sixty steep rooflines all meeting over the front door, which results in drifts, insane icicles, and gutters coming off on occasion. We like to say that the roof creates its own weather.
The icicle preventing cable actually will start down your downspout either below ground (if your downspout leads under the sod) or where the downspout ends. From there it goes up to your gutter in the trouble area, and hangs inside the gutter a little bit off the bottom with special hangers made for the purpose. After that it zigzags on the roof in a repeating "w" pattern, held to the shingles with clips. Anyway, welcome to the North, and something else we forgot to warn you about last Summer...
