Clogged Tear Ducts.

Elliot is currently eight months old.

Since he was born, he has had a clogged tear duct. This makes his right eye weepy and often goopy. Our pediatrician in Erie had told us that, if by the time he was 6 months old, it had not resolved, then we would be referred to an eye doctor and he would have to have surgery.

Can you see it in this picture? Your left. His right eye.

Well, with packing up and moving and graduation and general life thingies, we weren't able to get this procedure done before we left Erie. Now we're in a new city and working on finding a pediatrician.

Anyone else had this experience? I was hoping that his tear duct would resolve on its own but it hasn't yet. Any stories? Testimonials? Home Remedies? Infomercial products?

Jack had this. He would often get sent home from nurseries or MDO because people thought he had pink eye or some other infection. I just had to rub a warm wash cloth under his eye after he would wake up and when it was really goopy. He grew out of it but I don't think it was until he was close to a year old. It became less frequent but he still had occasional goopy eye until he was at least 1. I would definitely trust a pediatric opthamologist (sp?) and there should be plenty of specialists in your area that would take good care of him:)

Anniston had a clogged tear duct, too. Our doctor just said to put a warm cloth on it and massage at the tear duct to help it drain. It would go away pretty quickly when we did that and sometimes may return if she is sick or something. He didn't really talk about surgery, though, so I don't know if maybe hers just wasn't that bad...or maybe he wasn't as big as some when it comes to taking those measures? I don't know!

I don't have first hand experience but know of a little boy that had the same problem. It was corrected with the same procedure. Praying it will all go well.

WE HAD THE SAME PROBLEM! Oh my goodness...! Jackson had a clogged tear duct and we had to have a stent put in to correct it. We had one right when he was a year and it helped temporarily. The stent came out on its own and didn't fully correct the problem. About 6 months later we had another one put in using a Pediatric Opthalmologist in Shrevport. This was successful and we loved the doctor! They took it out a couple of months later and he has had no PROBLEMS! It was terrible to watch his goupey crusty eye...look back at my blog around March 2008 and then December 2008. I posted pics of the surgery. I would recommend using a specialist-- Peds Opthalmologist. Hope this helps!

Cole had this as well and our family doctor said the same thing about referring to a specialist if it didn't spontaneously go away by around 6 months old. I *think* it ended up resolving itself a bit after 6 months, although it was no thanks to me (lol). It was a completely weird thing---one day it was clogged, the next day it wasn't.

If you for sure need to follow up with a pedi optho, Dr. Packwood with Pediatric Eye Specialists is awesome. Colby has rotated with him. As far as pediatricians, I really like Dr. Ann Natterer on Lancaster with the Cook downtown clinic. Dr. Olvera or Osaid are also good and with Cook clinics. Can't wait to see y'all!

I don't have any personal experience with clogged tear ducts, but I can recommend a pediatrician if you are still looking. We use dr. Marcus Ozaeta with Cook's children's. He was recommended to us by a friend and we really like his laid back, doesn't-make-you-feel-like-an-over-reacting-mom demeanor. He's also relatively young and has TWO sets of twins.
Good luck!
